Let me make this clear. I was never a Marvel comics fan, but a DC one, but I was pulling for this movie to be great, and I loved the theme for this movie initially. An old school 60s vibe with the heroes and Herbie and a new member of the team, Franklin, a baby boy born of the seeds of Reed and Susan Richards. In this film it took them two years to conceive and finally they had this baby. This movie wasn’t an origin story but it did have origin moments.
Shalla-Bal, the new female Silver Surfer, different from the early 2000s movie and the cartoons, came to signal to this world that she chose earth for Galactus, the devourer of worlds. Notice the cornyness, just like Stan Lee’s Spider-Man. “You can do this Spidey, come on Spidey. Your friendly neighbourhood spider-man.” How corny.
Marvel is stuck in the days of its inception with corny lines like that and the whole thing with, “We gotta call The other Avengers. Jarvis.” Lines and words like that, and the overuse of references to each character from each character in every TV show and movie is excessive and a turnoff, making is silly for superhero fans to digest.
Everyone references every single Marvel character. I think this movie was a disaster and I would be shocked if it made any money at the box office but after disastrous Fantastic Four movies in the past from the cheesy one in 1990 aired constantly on 1990s HBO, I was disheartened. I hope it makes money and it will because it has a Marvel fanbase and the Fantastic Four is rightfully the first Marvel family and the brainchild of Stan Lee.
Stan, the founder/Creator of Marvel Comics, forefather of the marvel Empire loved by more fans than most DC movie fans is being let down. DC is finally making good movies again. The way Galactus died, which I loved though with Silver Surfer bumping Johnny out of the way to kill Galactis herself. She didn’t kill him, just moved him to the far reaches of the universe where he’s stranded and doesn’t have powers.
Franklin Richards lives but did Silver Surfer? I know she kicked him into the portal but did she go too? That was the ultimate betrayal of her master Galactus. Now she may not have a destiny. The movie sucked, I’m not lying but it deserves some praise even with no humour and ugly looking actors it deserves a watch for yourself.
I’m sure die hard Marvel fans will love it but I didn’t and am now hungry for a DC movie, any one, past, present and future, even Zack Snyder’s Justice League which was lukewarm and The Flash movie. Cringing. Let’s see how this movie turns out.
